What if? is a blog that invites creatives and artists to shift their thinking from the what is, to the what might be.
I set up this blog because I wanted to create a space for restless creativity and curiosity. To ask big questions about what kind of work we make and why.
The concept is inspired by my aunt Anna Craft, who worked in the field of creativity and early years education - she is well-known for her phrase 'possibility thinking' which she used to describe a shift in thinking, from a child asking 'what is this?' to exploration - 'what can I do with this? What could this be? Essentially - What if?
In explaining 'possibility thinking', Anna quotes six-year-old Max 'Choosing… is like a playtime… If you’re drawing you can go kind of mad, you can go like crazy, you can do whatever you like, you can make your mad ideas come true.'
The second part of the process is the important part that this blog can trigger -
Acting as if.
The rules of the game are simple: I interview an artist in their home or regular work space, and we chat. There is no set formula except that they must articulate a What If? question and we go from there...
